The Northern Ireland Supreme Court Rules Committee makes the following Rules in exercise of the powers conferred by sections 55, 55A and 57 of the Judicature (Northern Ireland) Act 1978[1]. Citation and Commencement 1. These Rules may be cited as the Rules of the Supreme Court (Northern Ireland) (Amendment No.2) 2006 and shall come into operation on 31st July 2006. Amendment to the Rules of the Supreme Court (Northern Ireland) 1980[2] 2. Order 64 shall be amended as follows— (1) For rule 2, there shall be substituted the following new rule—
2. —(1) One or more judges of the High Court or Court of Appeal shall sit in vacation on such days as the Lord Chief Justice may from time to time direct, to hear such causes or matters as require to be immediately or promptly heard. (2) A judge who sits in accordance with paragraph (1) shall be known as the "Vacation Judge"."
(2) Rule 3 shall be revoked. (This note is not part of the Order) These Rules amend Order 64 of the Rules of the Supreme Court (Northern Ireland) 1980. Rule 2(1) substitutes a new rule 2 into Order 64 which provides that judges of the High Court or Court of Appeal shall sit during vacation to hear cases in accordance with directions given by the Lord Chief Justice. It provides that any judge who sits during vacation is to be known as the Vacation Judge. Rule 2(2) revokes Rule 3 of Order 64.
