The Department of the Environment in exercise of the powers conferred by Article 9 of and Schedule 3 to the Superannuation (Northern Ireland) Order 1972[1] and now vested in it[2] and every other power enabling it in that behalf and after consultation with such associations of local authorities as appeared to it to be concerned, the local authorities with whom consultation appeared to it to be desirable and such representatives of other persons likely to be affected by the Regulations as appeared to it to be appropriate, hereby makes the following Regulations:
Citation, commencement and interpretation
1. - (1) These Regulations may be cited as the Local Government (Superannuation) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1998 and shall come into operation on 25th May 1998.
(2) In these Regulations -
-
"the principal Regulations" means the Local Government (Superannuation) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1992[3].
Amendment of the principal Regulations
2.
For paragraph 2, Part I of Schedule 20 to the principal Regulations there shall be substituted the following paragraph -

- (1) Subject to the provisions of paragraphs 2(2) and 5, the term of office of a member of the Committee shall be 4 years from the date of his appointment.
(2) The Head of the Department may extend the term of office of a member of the Committee by a maximum period of 18 months.".

These regulations amend the Local Government (Superannuation) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1992 (the principal Regulations).
Part I of Schedule 20 to the principal Regulations sets out the constitution of the Northern Ireland Local Government Officers' Superannuation Committee. Paragraph 2 thereof prescribes the term of office of members of the Committee. Regulation 2 of these regulations substitutes a new paragraph 2, which provides that -
-
(a) subject to the provisions of paragraph 2(2) and 5, the term of office of a member of the Northern Ireland Local Government Officers' Superannuation Committee, shall be 4 years (formerly 3 years) from the date of his appointment; and
(b) the Head of the Department may extend the term of office of each Committee member by a maximum period of 18 months.
