EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order.)

This Order, made under Article 13(1) and (6) of the Education Reform (Northern Ireland) Order 1989 ("the 1989 Order") specifies the core syllabus for the teaching of religious education in grant-aided schools. It revokes and replaces the Curriculum (Core Syllabus for Religious Education) (No. 2) Order (Northern Ireland) 1993.
Article 13(6) of the 1989 Order allows for an Order under Article 13(1), instead of containing the provisions to be made, to refer to provisions in a Document published by Her Majesty's Stationery Office and to direct that these provisions shall have effect according to the Order.
This Order accordingly refers to "Core Syllabus for Religious Education" and provides for the programmes of study set out in it to apply to all pupils at all key stages from 1st September 1996.
This Order further provides that any contents printed in italics in the Document are for illustrative purposes only, and do not form part of the provisions which have effect by virtue of this Order.
This Order comes into operation on 1st September 1996.
Copies of the Document entitled "Core Syllabus for Religious Education" may be obtained from Her Majesty's Stationery Office, 16 Arthur Street, Belfast BT1 4GD.
