ROAD TRAFFIC AND VEHICLES

Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996

The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 50(4)(a) of the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981^[1] and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order:

Citation, commencement and interpretation
    1.—(1)  This Order may be cited as the Roads (Speed Limit) Order (Northern Ireland) 1996 and shall come into operation on 19th February 1996.

    (2)  In this Order "the 1981 Order" means the Road Traffic (Northern Ireland) Order 1981.

Increase of speed limit
    2.    The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be increased from 30 miles per hour to 40 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 1.

    3.    The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be increased from 30 miles per hour to 50 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 2.

Reduction of speed limit
    4.    The rate of speed fixed by Article 50(1) of the 1981 Order shall be reduced from 40 miles per hour to 30 miles per hour in relation to the restricted roads specified in Schedule 3.

Revocations
    5.    The provisions described in Schedule 4 are hereby revoked.
