ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Genetically Modified Organisms (1991 Order) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 1994

Made 12th April 1994


    The Department of the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on it by Article 1(2) of the Genetically Modified Organisms (Northern Ireland) Order 1991[1] and paragraph 2(1) of Schedule 1 to the Northern Ireland Act 1974[2] and of every other power enabling it in that behalf, hereby makes the following order:
    Citation
        1.    This order may be cited as The Genetically Modified Organisms (1991 Order) (Commencement No. 1) Order (Northern Ireland) 1994.
    Appointed day
        2.    The following provisions of the Genetically Modified Organisms (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 shall come into operation on 1st June 1994:
    Articles 1 to 4,
    Article 5(1)(a) (in so far as it relates to the import or acquisition of genetically modified organisms), (1)(b), (3)(b), (5), (7), (9) and (10)
    Article 7 (in so far as it relates to the import, acquisition, release or marketing of genetically modified organisms),
    Article 8(1), (2), (4) to (6), (6A)[3], (7) to (11),
    Article 9(1)[4], (2), (5)[5] to (7),
    Articles 10 to 12,
    Article 13 (in so far as it relates to the import, acquisition, release or marketing of genetically modified organisms),
    Article 14,
    Article 15(1)(a), (c), (e) to (1), (m) in so far as it relates to Article 8, (n) and (o) and (2) to (11),
    Articles 16 to 18
    Article 19(1)(c) to (h), and (2) to (4)
    Articles 20 to 25.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the order.)
    This order brings into operation on 1st June 1994 certain provisions of the Genetically Modified Organisms (Northern Ireland) Order 1991 which makes provision for the purpose of preventing or minimising any damage to the environment which may arise from the escape or release from human control of genetically modified organisms.
