The City of Salford (Castlefield Bridge) Scheme 2000 Confirmation Instrument 2001

  Made 20th August 2001 
  Coming into force in accordance with article 1

The Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions makes this Instrument in exercise of powers conferred by section 106(3) of the Highways Act 1980[1] and now vested in him[2] and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf:

     1. This Instrument may be cited as The City of Salford (Castlefield Bridge) Scheme 2000 Confirmation Instrument 2001 and shall come into force on the date on which notice that it has been confirmed is first published in accordance with paragraph 1 of Schedule 2 to the Highways Act 1980.

    
2. The City of Salford (Castlefield Bridge) Scheme 2000 Confirmation Instrument 2001 ("the Scheme") is hereby confirmed with modifications.

    
3. The Scheme as confirmed is set out in the Schedule hereto (including the plan) and copies of the Scheme with its accompanying plan as modified are deposited at the offices of the Department for Transport, Local Government and the Regions, Floor 13 (IMD), Ashdown House, St. Leonards On Sea, Hastings, East Sussex TN37 7GA, and at the offices of the Council of the City of Salford at the Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA.

THE SCHEDULE

THE CITY OF SALFORD (CASTLEFIELD BRIDGE) SCHEME 2000


The Council of the City of Salford of Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA (hereinafter called "the Council") in agreement with the Council of the City of Manchester by virtue of Section 101 of the Local Government Act 1972 make this Scheme in exercise of their powers under Section 106(3) of the Highways Act 1980 and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf:

     1. The Council are authorised to construct over the navigable waters of the River Irwell the bridge specified in the Schedule to this Schedule as part of the highway known as the Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route which they are proposing to construct between Regent Road, Dawson Street, Manchester and Gore Street, Salford, in association with Manchester City Council.

     2. The Scheme may be cited as the City of Salford (Castlefield Bridge) Scheme 2000.

THE SCHEDULE TO THE SCHEME


PLANS AND SPECIFICATIONS OF THE CASTLEFIELD BRIDGE

The location and general design of the Bridge are shown on the plan numbered 05/808/01/PC marked "Manchester and Salford Inner Relief Route, Regent Road to Gore Street, Castlefield Bridge General Arrangement" sealed with the Common Seal of the Council of the City of Salford and deposited at the office of the Head of Law and Administration, Civic Centre, Chorley Road, Swinton, Manchester M27 5DA, and at the offices of the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions, Wellbar House, Gallowgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE1 4TD.

POINTS OF COMMENCEMENT AND TERMINATION

From a point at the Manchester bank of the River Irwell 165 metres upstream (east) of the existing Regent Road Bridge, to a point on the Salford bank 218 metres upstream of the same bridge and 70 metres upstream of existing Wilburn Street basin.

SPANS

The span over the river is 48.5 metres skew (43.78 metres square)

The Manchester side span is 18.03 metres skew (16.22 metres square)

The Salford side span over Towpath is 13.5 metres skew (12.18 metres square)

HEADWAY

Not less than 4.770 metres clear of normal water level of 21.68 metres A.O.D. over a square width of 33.19 metres. (Shipping Headroom requirement.)

WATERWAY

The width of river between existing river retaining walls remains unchanged.

The soffit of bridge deck is above the level 25.050 (100 year flood level + 0.6 metres freeboard - Environment Agency Requirement).

OVERALL DIMENSIONS

The bridge will be 27.65 metres wide overall and will carry a two lane dual carriageway each 7.3 metres wide, with a 1.5 metre wide cycleway alongside each way. A footway 2 metres wide is provided on the west side and 3 metres wide on the east side.
