The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 26(2) and 27(4) of the Welsh Language Act 1993[1], hereby makes the following Order: 1. This Order may be cited as the Elections (Welsh Forms) Order 2001 and shall come into force on 4th April 2001. 2. - (1) "Annibynnol" is hereby prescribed as the form of words in Welsh for the word "Independent" which is specified for use as the description of a candidate in a nomination paper by rule 6(3)(b) of the rules in Schedule 1 to the Representation of the People Act 1983[2]. (2) The form of words in Welsh which is prescribed by paragraph (1) may be used as well as or in place of the equivalent word in English at a parliamentary election in Wales. 3. - (1) "Annibynnol" is hereby prescribed as the form of words in Welsh for the word "Independent" which is specified for use as the description of a candidate in a nomination paper by rule 4(3)(b) of the rules in Schedule 2 to the Local Elections (Principal Areas) Rules 1986[3]. (2) The form of words in Welsh which are prescribed by paragraph (1) may be used as well as or in place of the equivalent word in English at a county council or county borough council election in Wales. 4. - (1) "Y Llefarydd yn ailymgeisio" is hereby prescribed as the form of words in Welsh for the words "The Speaker seeking re-election" which are specified for use as the description of a candidate in a nomination paper by rule 6(3)(b) of the rules in Schedule 1 to the Representation of the People Act 1983. (2) The form of words in Welsh which is prescribed by paragraph (1) may be used in place of the equivalent words in English at a parliamentary election in Wales. Mike O'Brien Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State Home Office 27th March 2001 (This note is not part of the Order) Rule 6(3)(b) of the rules in Schedule 1 to the Representation of the People Act 1983, as substituted by section 38(2) of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, restricts the description that may be used by a candidate in a nomination paper to the forms of words specified in that provision, except where he uses a description authorised by a political party registered under Part II of the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000. Rule 4(3)(b) of the rules in Schedule 2 to the Local Elections (Principal Areas) Rules 1986 (as substituted by S.I. 2001/81) makes similar provision in respect of local government elections in England and Wales other than parish or community council elections. As respects the word "Independent", articles 2 and 3 of this Order prescribe a Welsh version of that form of words which may be used as well as or in place of the English version at parliamentary elections and county and county borough council elections in Wales. As respects the words "The Speaker seeking re-election", article 4 prescribes a Welsh version of that form of words that may be used in place of the English version at a parliamentary election in Wales.
