CONTINENTAL SHELF

The Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Order 1999

  Made 21st July 1999 
  Coming into force in accordance with Article 1(3).

The Queen's Most Excellent Majesty in Council

Whereas by the Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Orders 1964 to 1997[1] certain areas are designated as areas within which the rights of the United Kingdom with respect to the sea bed and subsoil and their natural resources may be exercised:

     And whereas it is expedient that a further such area should be so designated:

     Now, therefore, Her Majesty, in exercise of the powers conferred on Her by section 1(7) of the Continental Shelf Act 1964[2] and of all other powers enabling Her in that behalf, is pleased, by and with the advice of Her Privy Council, to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:-

     1.  - (1) This Order may be cited as the Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Order 1999.

    (2) This Order and the Orders recited in the preamble to this Order may be cited together as the Continental Shelf (Designation of Areas) Orders 1964 to 1999.

    (3) This Order shall come into force on 12th August 1999, or on the date on which the Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark together with the Home Government of the Faeroe Islands, on the one hand, and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on the other hand, relating to Maritime Delimitation in the area between the Faeroe Islands and the United Kingdom enters into force, whichever is the later.

    The date on which the said Agreement enters into force shall be notified in the London, Edinburgh and Belfast Gazettes.

     2. The area defined in the Schedule to this Order is hereby designated as an area within which the rights of the United Kingdom outside territorial waters with respect to the sea bed and subsoil and their natural resources are exercisable.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order designates a further area of the continental shelf to the north of Scotland up to the agreed continental shelf boundary set out in the Agreement between the Government of the Kingdom of Denmark together with the Home Government of the Faeroe Islands, on the one hand, and the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, on the other hand, relating to the Maritime Delimitation in the area between the Faeroe Islands and the United Kingdom (Cm. 4373), as an area in which the rights of the United Kingdom with respect to the seabed and subsoil and their natural resources are exercisable.
