LANDMINES

The Landmines Act 1998 (Commencement) Order 1999

In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 29(2) of the Landmines Act 1998[1], I hereby make the following Order:

     1. This Order may be cited as the Landmines Act 1998 (Commencement) Order 1999.

Appointed day
    
2. The day appointed for the coming into force of the Landmines Act 1998 is 1st March 1999.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order brings into force the Landmines Act 1998 ("the Act") on 1st March 1999.

The Act gives effect to the provisions of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction[
2] ("the Convention"), opened for signature at Ottawa on 3rd and 4th December 1997.

The United Kingdom deposited its instrument of ratification of the Convention on 31st July 1998 and will therefore become a party to it when, in accordance with Article 17 thereof, it enters into force on 1st March 1999.
