Whereas the Secretary of State for Education and Employment is satisfied that the schools specified in the Schedule to this Order had selective admission arrangements at the beginning of the 1997-98 school year; Now, therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 104(1) of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998[1] the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Order:- Citation and commencement 1. This Order may be cited as the Education (Grammar School Designation) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 1st October 1998. Designation of grammar schools 2. The schools specified in the Schedule to this Order (which are maintained by the local education authorities specified in the left hand column of that Schedule or, in the case of grant-maintained schools within the meaning of the Education Act 1996[2], situated in the areas of those authorities) are designated as grammar schools for the purposes of Chapter II of Part III of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998.
