In exercise of the powers conferred by sections 484 and 569(4) of the Education Act 1996[1], the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Regulations; 1. These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998 (Amendment) Regulations 1998 and shall come into force on 17th August 1998. 2. The Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998[2] shall be amended as follows. 3. In regulation 2(1) the following definitions shall be inserted at the appropriate places-

In regulation 5(2) the following entries shall be inserted at the end of the table in the left hand and right hand columns respectively-
(b) through the creation of new classroom spaces in maintained schools by the erection of new buildings or the alteration of existing premises.";
(b) after paragraph 24 there shall be inserted the following paragraphs-
26. Support for beacon schools to assist them in undertaking activities designed to disseminate good practice in schools, including the provision of additional staff to assist such schools for periods during which teachers are undertaking such activities. 27. Support for the establishment of advanced skills teacher posts in specialist schools, including the provision of additional staff to assist such schools for periods during which teachers are carrying out activities related to their advanced skills teacher status and for the additional cost of employing an advanced skills teacher. 28. Support for the setting up and running of pilot projects for the regional co-ordination of special educational needs provision and services, including support for the employment of staff to manage and administer the projects. 29. Measures to encourage the inclusion of children with special educational needs in mainstream schools (that is to say schools other than special schools), including-
(b) support in establishing and maintaining pilot projects.

Support for measures to assist the recruitment and retention of teachers, including the employment of staff to co-ordinate teacher recruitment initiatives in education authorities and the administrative staff to support them."
(This note is not part of the Regulations) These Regulations amend the Education (Grants for Education Support and Training) (England) Regulations 1998. The Regulations add new purposes for or in connection with which grants are payable. The new purposes relate to the creation of new classroom spaces so as to reduce the number of pupils in infant classes over 30, support for summer numeracy schools, support for beacon schools, support for advanced skills teachers, support for pilot projects for the regional co-ordination of special educational needs provision and services, measures to encourage the inclusion of children with special educational needs in mainstream classes and support for measures to assist the recruitment and retention of teachers.
