URBAN DEVELOPMENT

The Urban Development Corporations in England (Area and Constitution) Order 1998

  Made 19th January 1998 
  Laid before Parliament 27th January 1998 
  Coming into force 3rd April 1998 

The Secretary of State for the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 134, 135 and 141 of, and paragraph 1 of Schedule 26 to, the Local Government, Planning and Land Act 1980[1], and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Order - 

Citation and commencement
     1. This Order may be cited as the Urban Development Corporations in England (Area and Constitution) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 3rd April 1998.

Urban development area
    
2.  - (1) Articles 2 and 3 of each of the following Orders are hereby revoked - 

    (a) the Birmingham Heartlands Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1992[2];

    (b) the Black Country Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1987[3];

    (c) the London Docklands Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1980[4];

    (d) the Merseyside Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1980[5];

    (e) the Plymouth Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1993[6];

    (f) the Teesside Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1987[7];

    (g) the Trafford Park Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1986[8]; and

    (h) the Tyne and Wear Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) Order 1987[9].

    (2) The following Orders are hereby revoked - 

    (a) the Liverpool and Wirral Urban Development Area Order 1988[10];

    (b) the London Docklands Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) (Amendment) Order 1981[11]; and

    (c) the Wolverhampton Urban Development Area Order 1988[12].

    (3) So much of the Orders listed in paragraph (1) above as has not previously been revoked shall be revoked with effect from 1st July 1998.

Vesting orders
     3. The Orders listed in the Schedule to this Order shall be revoked with effect from 1st July 1998.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)


This Order revokes the Orders which designated the urban development areas in Birmingham Heartlands, the Black Country, London Docklands, Merseyside, Plymouth, Teesside, Trafford Park, and Tyne and Wear and which established urban development corporations for those areas. Articles 2 and 3 of each of those Orders, which designated the areas, are revoked from 3rd April 1998 and the remainder is revoked from 1st July 1998 (article 2(1) and (3)).

This Order also revokes, from 3rd April 1998, the Liverpool and Wirral Urban Development Area Order 1988, the London Docklands Development Corporation (Area and Constitution) (Amendment) Order 1981 and the Wolverhampton Urban Development Area Order 1988, which altered the extent of the Merseyside, London Docklands and Black Country urban development areas respectively (article 2(2)).

This Order also revokes, from 1st July 1998, Orders which vested land in the urban development corporations in England (article 3 and the Schedule).
