In exercise of the powers conferred upon me by section 37(1) of the Police Act 1996[1], after consultation in accordance with section 37(2) of that Act, I hereby make the following Order: 1. This Order may be cited as the Police (Secretary of State's Objectives) Order 1998 and shall come into force on 1st April 1998. 2. The Police (Secretary of State's Objectives) Order 1994[2] is hereby revoked. 3. The objectives for the policing of the areas of all police authorities established under section 3 of the Police Act 1996 are -
(b) to target and reduce local problems of crime and disorder in partnership with local authorities, other local agencies and the public; (c) to target drug-related crime in partnership with other local agencies; (d) to maintain and, if possible, increase the number of detections for violent crime; (e) to increase the number of detections for burglaries of people's homes; and (f) To respond promptly to emergency calls from the public.
(This note is not part of the Order) This Order sets out the Secretary of State's objectives for the policing of the areas of all police authorities established under section 3 of the Police Act 1996. The objectives replace those set out in the Police (Secretary of State's Objectives) Order 1994 which is revoked by this Order. Section 6(2)(a) of the 1996 Act requires police authorities to have regard to these objectives in the discharge of their functions. Local policing objectives determined under section 7 of the 1996 Act must be consistent with these objectives. Section 8 of the 1996 Act requires police authorities to issue local policing plans which must give particulars of these objectives. Notes: [1] 1996 c.16.back
