ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

The Waste Management Licensing (Amendment) Regulations 1996

Coming into force 14th May 1996

    The Secretary of State, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 33(3) of the Environmental Protection Act 1990[1], (having in particular had regard in exercising that power to the matters speciifed in section 33(4) of that Act) and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf hereby makes the following Regulations:
    Citation and commencement
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Waste Management Licensing (Amendment) Regulations 1996 and shall come into force on 14th May 1996.
    Amendment of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994
        2.—(1)  In paragraph 17 of Schedule 3 to the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994[2], there shall be added:
       (a) at the end of Table 4 in the columns headed "Kind of waste" and "Maximum total quantity" respectively:
      waste mammalian protein 60,000 tonnes
      waste mammalian tallow 45,000 tonnes
       (b) after sub-paragraph (2)—
        "  (3)  In this paragraph—

          "mammalian protein" means proteinaceous material and "mammalian tallow" means fat, which in each case is derived from the whole or part of any dead mammal by a process of crushing, cooking or grinding." .

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    These Regulations amend paragraph 17 of Schedule 3 to the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994 which exempts from waste management licensing the storage of certain specified kinds of waste where certain conditions are satisfied. The amendment adds two further kinds of waste: mammalian protein and mammalian tallow. Both are products of the rendering of animal carcasses and are defined in the amended paragraph.
