LOCAL GOVERNMENT, ENGLAND AND WALES

The Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (Commencement No. 18) Order 1996

Made 15th July 1996

    In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by section 195(2) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989[1] the Secretary of State for Education and Employment hereby makes the following Order—
        1.    This Order may be cited as the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 (Commencement No. 18) Order 1996.
        2.    Section 194(4) of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, in so far as it relates to the following repeals in Part II of Schedule 12 to that Act, shall come into force on 22nd July 1996—

    1984 c. 11 The Education (Grants and Awards) Act 1984 In section 1, in subsection (6) the words "or section 2 below" and in subsection (7) the words "in those sections".

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This Note is not part of the Order)
    This Order brings into force on 22nd July 1996 provisions of the Local Government and Housing Act 1989 which repeal—
      (a) Section 2 of the Education (Grants and Awards) Act 1984 and references to that section in section 1 of that Act. (By virtue of section 188 of the 1989 Act the limit on expenditure qualifying for education support grant imposed by section 2 of the 1984 Act ceased to apply with effect from 1st April 1990.)
      (b) Section 1 of the Education (Amendment) Act 1986, which had increased the limit originally imposed by section 2 of the 1984 Act; and section 3, the only remaining provision of the 1986 Act, giving its short title and extent.
