REGISTRATION OF BIRTHS, DEATHS, MARRIAGES, ETC.
ENGLAND AND WALES

The Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Amendment) Regulations 1996

Made 24th June 1996
Coming into force 1st August 1996

    The Registrar General in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 20(a) of the Registration Service Act 1953[1] and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, with the approval of the Chancellor of the Exchequer[2] hereby makes the following Regulations —
    Citation and commencement
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages (Amendment) Regulations 1996 and shall come into force on 1st August 1996.
    Amendment of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages Regulations 1968
        2.    Paragraph (1) of regulation 10 of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages Regulations 1968[3] (transaction of private business by registration officers) is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    These Regulations revoke regulation 10(1) of the Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages Regulations 1968, which prohibits registration officers from transacting, or furthering the transaction of commercial activities.

[2] The approval of the Chancellor of the Exchequer is required by section 20 of the Registration Service Act 1953. "Secretary of State" was substituted for "Minister of Health" in that section by the Secretary of State for Social Services Order 1968 (S.I. 1968/1699) article 5(4)(a) and the functions of the Secretary of State under that section were transferred to the Chancellor of the Exchequer by the Transfer of Functions (Registration and Statistics) Order 1996 (S.I. 1996/273) article 3(1). back
