ROAD TRAFFIC

The Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations and General Directions 1995

Made 29th November 1995
Laid before Parliament 12th December 1995
Coming into force 5th January 1996

    The Secretary of State for Transport, the Secretary of State for Scotland and the Secretary of State for Wales acting jointly in exercise of the powers conferred on them by sections 64(1), (2) and (3) and 65(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984[1] hereby—
      (a) after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with section 134(2) of that Act, make the Regulations set out in Part I, and
      (b) give the Directions set out in Part II,
    of this Instrument.


PART I

THE TRAFFIC SIGNS (AMENDMENT) REGULATIONS 1995
    Citation and commencement
        1.    This Part of this Instrument—
       (a) may be cited—
         (i) as the Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations 1995, and
         (ii) together with Part II of this Instrument, as the Traffic Signs (Amendment) Regulations and General Directions 1995; and
       (b) shall come into force on 5th January 1996.
    Interpretation
        2.    In these Regulations "the principal regulations" means the Traffic Signs Regulations 1994[2].
    Amendment of the principal regulations
        3.—(1)  The principal regulations shall be amended as follows.

        (2)  In regulation 4 for the definition of "tourist attraction" there shall be substituted—
      ""tourist attraction" means a permanently established destination or facility which—
        (a) attracts or is used by visitors to an area;
        (b) is open to the public without prior booking during its normal opening hours;
        (c) if located in Scotland is recognised by the Scottish Tourist Board; and
        (d) if located in Wales is recognised by the Wales Tourist Board;" .


        (3)  In Part IV of Schedule 7—
       (a) for the heading there shall be substituted—
        "SIGNS FOR SERVICES AND TOURIST FACILITIES (other than on motorways)" ;
       (b) after diagram 2323 there shall be inserted diagrams 2324 to 2329, together with the captions and tables beneath those diagrams, as set out in the Schedule to these Regulations.

        (4)  In Part VII of Schedule 7—
       (a) at the end of item 4 of the table under diagram 2607 there shall be inserted—
        "The bed symbol shown in diagram 2324, the spoon and fork symbol shown in diagram 2326 or the cup symbol shown in diagram 2327 may be added as appropriate where the sign indicates the direction to serviced accommodation or refreshment facilities." ; and
       (b) at the end of item 4 of the table under diagram 2608 there shall be inserted—
        "The bed symbol shown in diagram 2324, the spoon and fork symbol shown in diagram 2326 or the cup symbol shown in diagram 2327 may be added as appropriate where the sign indicates the direction to serviced accommodation or refreshment facilities."

        (5)  In Schedule 16—
       (a) in column (2) of item 3, after "2323," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329,";
       (b) in column (2) of item 6, after "2323," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329,";
       (c) in column (2) of item 12, after "2315.1," there shall be inserted "2324, 2326, 2328,";
       (d) in column (2) of item 15, after "2323," there shall be inserted "2325, 2327, 2329,";
       (e) in column (2) of item 19, after "2309," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329,";
       (f) in column (2) of item 24, after "2203," there shall be inserted "2328, 2329,";
       (g) in column (3) of item 24—
         (i) after the words "brown panel" there shall be inserted the words "or background"; and
         (ii) after the words "such a name together" there shall be inserted "or the name or a generic description of serviced accommodation or refreshment facilities and the appropriate symbol shown in diagram 2324, 2325, 2326 or 2327";
       (h) in column (2) of item 28, after "2323," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2328, 2329,";
       (i) in column (2) of item 29, after "2322," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327,";
       (j) in column (2) of item 33, after "2216," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329,"; and
       (k) in column (3) of item 33, after the words "tourist attraction" there shall be inserted "or facility used by tourists".

        (6)  In Schedule 17 in column (2) of item 9, after "2323," there shall be inserted "2324, 2325, 2326, 2327, 2328, 2329,".
