MARRIAGE

The Marriage Act 1994 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1995

Made 23rd February 1995

    In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3(2) of the Marriage Act 1994[1], I hereby make the following Order:
    Citation and interpretation
        1.—(1)  This Order may be cited as the Marriage Act 1994 (Commencement No. 2) Order 1995.

        (2)  In this Order "the Act" means the Marriage Act 1994.
    Appointed days
        2.—(1)  24th February 1995 is the day appointed for the coming into force of the following provisions of the Act—
       (a) section 1(2) of the Act (approval of premises— marriages on approved premises) so far as it inserts sections 46A and 46B(2) in the Marriage Act 1949[2];
       (b) section 1(3) of and the Schedule to the Act (approved premises: consequential amendments) so far as it inserts section 51(1A) in the Marriage Act 1949.

        (2)  1st April 1995 is the day appointed for the coming into force of the following provisions of the Act—
       (a) section 1(1) (solemnization of marriages on premises approved by local authorities);
       (b) section 1(2) (marriages on approved premises), so far as not already in force on that date;
       (c) section 1(3) of and the Schedule to the Act (approved premises: consequential amendments), so far as not already in force on that date;
       (d) section 2(1) (registration districts in which marriages may be solemnized), so far as not already in force on that date.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)
    This Order brings into force on 24th February 1995 those provisions of the Marriage Act 1994 ("the Act") which enable the Secretary of State to make regulations in connection with the approval of premises by local authorities for use as a venue for civil marriages.
    This Order brings into force on 1st April 1995 all those provisions of the Act which are not already in force. Those provisions allow civil marriages to take place on approved premises, impose certain requirements regarding such marriages and make consequential amendments.
