ROAD TRAFFIC

The Cycle Racing on Highways (Tour de France 1994) Regulations 1994

Made 28th April 1994
Laid before Parliament 10th May 1994
Coming into force 1st June 1994

    The Secretary of State for Transport in exercise of the powers conferred by section 31(2) and (3) of the Road Traffic Act 1988[1] and after consultation with representative organisations in accordance with section 195(2) of that Act hereby makes the following Regulations:—
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Cycle Racing on Highways (Tour de France 1994) Regulations 1994 and shall come into force on 1st June 1994.
        2.—(1)  In these Regulations—
      "the principal Regulations" means the Cycle Racing on Highways Regulations 1960[2]; and

      "the specified races" means those stages of the Tour de France 1994 which are proposed to be held in England on 6th and 7th July 1994.

        3.—(1)  The principal Regulations shall have effect in their application to the specified races as if in regulation 5(1)(a)—
       (a) for sub-paragraph (i) there were substituted—
          "(i) the number of competitors must not exceed 220;" , and
       (b) sub-paragraphs (iii) and (iv) were omitted.

        (2)  Except as provided by paragraph (1) of this regulation, the principal Regulations shall apply to the specified races as they apply to any other bicycle race.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    The purpose of these Regulations is to authorise the holding of two stages of the Tour de France in England on 6th and 7th July 1994. These Regulations apply the Cycle Racing on Highways Regulations 1960 to those stages subject to three variations in the standard conditions set out in regulation 5(1)(a) of those Regulations. As respects the Tour de France, these Regulations increase the maximum permitted number of competitors to 220 and disapply the conditions limiting the extent to which the route of the race may pass along the same length of road more than once and may pass along roads subject to speed limits of 40 miles per hour or less.
