EDUCATION, ENGLAND AND WALES

The Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1993

Made 16th July 1993
Laid before Parliament 26th July 1993
Coming into force 1st September 1993

    In exercise of the powers conferred on the Secretary of State by sections 50 and 63 of the Education (No.2) Act 1986[1], the Secretary of State for Education, as respects England, and the Secretary of State for Wales, as respects Wales, hereby make the following Regulations:
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) (Amendment) Regulations 1993 and shall come into force on 1st September 1993.
        2.    In these Regulations, a reference to the principal Regulations is a reference to the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1988[2].
        3.    In regulation 2 of the principal Regulations—
       (a) in the definition of a "course of initial teacher training", for "paragraph 2(2)(a)(iii) of Schedule 5 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1989" there shall be substituted "paragraph 2(1)(c) of Schedule 3 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993[3]"; and
       (b) in the definition of a "qualified teacher", for "Schedule 5 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1989" there shall be substituted "Schedule 3 to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993".
        4.    In regulation 7 of the principal Regulations—
       (a) in paragraph (1), for "(4) and (5)" there shall be substituted "(4), (5) and (6)";
       (b) at the beginning of paragraphs (2) and (3), there shall be inserted the words "Subject to paragraph (6)";
       (c) in paragraph (5), after "(1) and (3)", there shall be inserted "or (6)";
       (d) a new paragraph shall be added after paragraph (5) as follows:
        "  (6)  In the case of a student who commences a course on or after 1st September 1993, a training bursary shall be £1,000 a year, and a student commencing a course on or after that date shall not be entitled to an equipment allowance of £200 under paragraph (2) or an allowance of £500 a year under paragraph (3)." .

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    These Regulations amend the Education (Bursaries for Teacher Training) Regulations 1988.
    Updated references to the Education (Teachers) Regulations 1993 have been introduced (regulation 3).
    The amount of the bursary for students commencing a course on or after 1st September 1993 will be £1,000; students commencing a course on or after that date will not be entitled to the equipment allowance of £200 for students of craft, design and technology or to the allowance of £500 a year for intending teachers of physics which have been available up to that date (regulation 4).
