The Academic Awards and Distinctions (Glasgow Caledonian University) (Scotland) Order of Council 1993

By the Lords of Her Majesty's Most Honourable Privy Council

    Their Lordships, in exercise of the powers conferred upon Them by sections 48 and 60 of the Further and Higher Education (Scotland) Act 1992[1] and all other powers enabling Them in that behalf, are pleased to order, and it is hereby ordered, as follows:
    Citation, commencement and interpretation
        1.—(1)  This Order may be cited as the Academic Awards and Distinctions (Glasgow Caledonian University) (Scotland) Order of Council 1993 and shall come into force on 1st April 1993.

        (2)  In this Order "the Act" means the Further and Higher Education (Scotland) Act 1992.
    Competence to grant academic awards and distinctions
        2.—(1)  Glasgow Caledonian University is specified as competent to grant all such awards and distinctions as may be granted in pursuance of subsections (2) and (3) of section 48 of the Act.

        (2)  The date specified for the purpose of subsection (2)(a) of section 48 of the Act is, in relation to Glasgow Caledonian University,
       (a) 1st September 1992 in respect of grants of awards or distinctions in respect of completion of an appropriate course of study or programme of supervised research which either was completed at Glasgow Polytechnic or was approved by Glasgow Polytechnic for the purpose of grants of any awards or distinctions by it; and
       (b) 1st April 1993 in respect of grants of awards or distinctions in all other circumstances.

        (3)  If the name of Glasgow Caledonian University is changed under section 49 of the Act, or under any other power, the competence to grant awards and distinctions arising from the specification in paragraph (1) above shall continue to apply to that institution as renamed.
    Revocation
        3.    In the Academic Awards and Distinctions (Scotland) Order of Council 1992[2], Article 2(1)(b) (specification of Glasgow Polytechnic) is hereby revoked.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)
    This Order specifies Glasgow Caledonian University as competent to grant degrees, diplomas, certificates or other academic awards or distinctions, including honorary degrees and degrees to members of staff.
    Glasgow Caledonian University is a new institution established on 1st April 1993, upon the merger of Glasgow Polytechnic and The Queen's College, Glasgow.
    The competence to grant awards and distinctions upon completion of a course of study or programme of research applies only to courses or programmes of research completed on or after a certain date. The University can grant awards and distinctions to persons who completed on or after 1st September 1992 courses or programmes of research at its predecessor, Glasgow Polytechnic, or which were approved by Glasgow Polytechnic for the purpose of grants of awards or distinctions by it. The latter category includes in particular courses or programmes at The Queen's College, Glasgow. Otherwise its competence applies only to courses or programmes of research completed on or after 1st April 1993, the date of its establishment.
    The specification of Glasgow Polytechnic is revoked in consequence of the merger.
