DEFENCE

The Atomic Weapons Establishment (Designation and Appointed Day) Order 1992

Made 29th October 1992
Laid before Parliament 2nd November 1992
Coming into operation 30th March 1993

    The Secretary of State for Defence, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 1(1) of the Atomic Weapons Establishment Act 1991[1] (hereinafter referred to as "the Act"), hereby makes the following Order:—
        1.    This Order may be cited as the Atomic Weapons Establishment (Designation and Appointed Day) Order 1992 and shall come into force on 30th March 1993.
        2.    The premises designated for the purposes of section 1(1) of the Act are those premises forming part of the undertaking carried on by the Secretary of State on the data the Act came into force and known as the Atomic Weapons Establishment, more particularly described as—
       (a) Atomic Weapons Establishment Aldermaston, Reading, Berkshire RG7 4PR (including the separate site forming part of that Establishment at Blacknest, Brimpton, Reading, Berkshire, RG7 4RS);
       (b) Atomic Weapons Establishment, The mearings, Burghfield, Reading, Berkshire RG3 3RP;
       (c) Atomic Weapons Establishment, Caerphilly Road, Llanishen, Cardiff CF4 5XY;
       (d) Atomic Weapons Establishment, Foulness, Southend-on-Sea, Essex SS3 9XE.
        3.    The activities designated for the purposes of section 1(1) of the Act in relation to each of the premises designated by Article 2 of this Order are any activities connected with the development, production, or maintenance of nuclear devices or with research into such devices or their effects.
        4.    The day appointed for the purposes of section 1(1) of this Act is 31st March 1993.

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Order)
    These Atomic Weapons Establishment Act 1991 applies in relation to such activities, carried on at such premises, as may abe designated by the Secretary of State. This Order designates those activities and premises, and also appoints a day for the purposes of the definition of "the qualified employees" in section 1(1) of the Act.
