ROAD TRAFFIC

The Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Amendment) Regulations 1992

Coming into force 1st October 1992

    The Secretary of State for Transport, being a Minister designated[1] for the purposes of section 2(2) of the European Communities Act 1972[2] in relation to the regulation of the type, description, construction or equipment of vehicles, and of components of vehicles, and in particular any vehicle type approval scheme, in exercise of the powers conferred by that section and of all other enabling powers, hereby makes the following Regulations:
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) (Amendment) Regulations 1992 and shall come into force on 1st October 1992.
        2.—(1)  Part 1 of Schedule 2 to the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) Regulations 1980[3] is hereby amended as follows.

        (2)  In item 14, in the entry in column 2, there shall be added—
      "or

        (3)  In item 20, in the entry in column 2, there shall be added—
      "or

        (4)  After item 42, there shall be added the following items—

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
        1.    These Regulations further amend the Motor Vehicles (Type Approval) Regulations 1980 so that—
      (a) the type approval requirements relating to the behaviour of the steering wheel and column in an impact are, as an alternative to the existing requirements, the requirements of Council Directive 74/297/EEC as amended by Commission Directive 91/662/EEC;
      (b) the type approval requirements relating to the installation of lighting and light- signalling devices on motor vehicles and their trailers are, as an alternative to the existing requirements, the requirements of Council Directive 76/756/EEC as amended by Commission Directives 80/233/EEC, 82/244/EEC, 83/276/EEC, 84/8/EEC as corrected in O.J. L135, 22.5.1984, p.27, 89/278/EEC as corrected in O.J. L114, 27.4.89, p.52 and 91/663/EEC;
      (c) the type approval requirements relating to safety glazing and glazing materials on motor vehicles and their trailers are the are the requirements of Council Directive 92/22/EEC;
      (d) the type approval requirements relating to tyres for motor vehicles and their trailers and to their fitting are the requirements of Council Directive 92/23/EEC.

        2.    Copies of the Council Directives and Commission Directives referred to in the Regulations may be obtained from Her Majesty's Stationery Office.
