REPRESENTATION OF THE PEOPLE

The Returning Officers' Expenses (Amendment) Regulations 1989

Made 2nd May 1989
Coming into force 4th May 1989

    The Treasury, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 29(3) of the Representation of the People Act 1983[1] and of all other powers enabling them in that behalf, hereby make the following Regulations:-
        1.    These Regulations may be cited as the Returning Officers' Expenses (Amendment) Regulations 1989 and shall come into force on 4th May 1989.
        2.    The Schedule to the Returning Officers' Expenses Regulations 1987[2] shall be amended as follows:-
       (a) In Part A of the Schedule, after paragraph I.1, there shall be inserted the following paragraph -
              "(1A)    For the extra duties arising from the conduct of a parliamentary election and a local government election within or in part of the parliamentary constituency on the same day ............. ... ... £207.00" ;
       (b) In Part B of the Schedule,
         (i) at the end of paragraph I.1 there shall be inserted the following paragraph -
            "In addition, a further sum of £22.00 may be paid to each presiding officer at a polling station where electors ae entitled to vote in a parliamentary election and in a local government election on the same day." ;
         (ii) at the end of paragraph I.2(b) there shall be inserted the following paragraph -
            "In addition, a further sum of £10.00 may be paid to each clerk at a polling station where electors are entitled to vote in a parliamentary election and in a local government election on the same day." ;
         (iii) after paragraph I.4(c) there shall be inserted the following paragaph -
            "(d) In the event of a local government election taking place in the parliamentary constituency on the same day, an extra fee of £910.00 may be paid for each such parliamentary constituency for the verification of the ballot papers." .

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Regulations)
    These Regulations amend the Returning Officers' Expenses Regulations 1987. They prescribe, in relation to England, Wales and Scotland, a scale of maximum charges in respect of services rendered and expenses incurred by a returning officer for the purposes of or in connection with a parliamentary election where a local government election takes place on the same day as a parliamentary election.
