PENSIONS

The War Pensions (Mercantile Marine) (Amendment) Scheme 1987

Made 16th March 1987
Coming into force 6th April 1987

    The Secretary of State for Social Services in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 7 of the Pensions (Navy, Army, Air Force and Mercantile Marine) Act 1939[1] , as amended by the Pensions (Mercantile Marine) Act 1942[2] and of all other powers enabling him in that behalf, hereby makes the following Scheme:—
    Citation, commencement and interpretation
        1.    This Scheme, which may be cited as the War Pensions (Mercantile Marine) (Amendment) Scheme 1987, amends the War Pensions (Mercantile Marine) Scheme 1964[3] (hereinafter referred to as "the principal Scheme" ), and shall come into force on 6th April 1987.
    Abolition of funeral grants
        2.—(1)  The principal Scheme shall be amended in accordance with the following provisions of this Article.

        (2)  Article 19 (funeral grants) is hereby revoked.

        (3)  In Articles 22, 23 and 25 for the words, "gratuity or funeral grant" wherever they appear there shall be substituted the words "or gratuity" .

EXPLANATORY NOTE

(This note is not part of the Scheme)
    This Scheme, which comes into force on 6th April 1987, removes the provision for payment of funeral grants from the War Pensions (Mercantile Marine) Scheme 1964 to coincide with the abolition of social security death grants.
